The Fahrenheit to Celsius Conversion Formula
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply the result by 5/9. This adjusts for both the different zero points and the different step sizes between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales.
The Celsius scale places water freezing at 0°C and boiling at 100°C. On the Fahrenheit scale, those same points are 32°F and 212°F. That is why the formula first removes 32, then rescales the number.
Reverse Operation

Understanding Fahrenheit and Celsius
Fahrenheit is commonly used for weather, body temperature, ovens, and household temperature settings in the United States. Celsius is used by most countries and is the standard temperature scale for everyday metric measurement.
The two scales measure the same heat, but they use different reference points. Fahrenheit sets water freezing at 32°F and boiling at 212°F, while Celsius uses 0°C and 100°C. This converter handles that difference instantly.
Fahrenheit to Celsius FAQs
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For
quick mental math, you can estimate with
°C ≈ (°F − 30) ÷ 2.
(68 − 32) × 5/9 = 20°C.
(72 − 32) × 5/9 = 22.2°C.
(80 − 32) × 5/9 = 26.7°C.
(98 − 32) × 5/9 = 36.7°C. For reference,
98.6°F = 37°C.
(100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.8°C.
