The Fahrenheit to Celsius Conversion Formula

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply the result by 5/9. This adjusts for both the different zero points and the different step sizes between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales.

The Celsius scale places water freezing at 0°C and boiling at 100°C. On the Fahrenheit scale, those same points are 32°F and 212°F. That is why the formula first removes 32, then rescales the number.

Reverse Operation

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

Working backward? Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5, then add 32, or use our dedicated Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter →.

How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Use these steps when you want to calculate Fahrenheit to Celsius manually.

1
Start with the Fahrenheit temperature.
Example: 68°F
2
Subtract 32. This adjusts the Fahrenheit freezing point to the Celsius zero point.
68 − 32 = 36
3
Multiply by 5/9.
36 × 5/9 = 20°C

Understanding Fahrenheit and Celsius

Fahrenheit is commonly used for weather, body temperature, ovens, and household temperature settings in the United States. Celsius is used by most countries and is the standard temperature scale for everyday metric measurement.

The two scales measure the same heat, but they use different reference points. Fahrenheit sets water freezing at 32°F and boiling at 212°F, while Celsius uses 0°C and 100°C. This converter handles that difference instantly.

Fahrenheit to Celsius FAQs

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then multiply by 5/9. Formula: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
The exact formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For quick mental math, you can estimate with °C ≈ (°F − 30) ÷ 2.
32°F = 0°C. This is the freezing point of water.
68°F = 20°C. Calculation: (68 − 32) × 5/9 = 20°C.
72°F ≈ 22.2°C. Calculation: (72 − 32) × 5/9 = 22.2°C.
80°F ≈ 26.7°C. Calculation: (80 − 32) × 5/9 = 26.7°C.
98°F ≈ 36.7°C. Calculation: (98 − 32) × 5/9 = 36.7°C. For reference, 98.6°F = 37°C.
100°F ≈ 37.8°C. Calculation: (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.8°C.
